Eressos and Skala Eressou: two villages in one
When people say “Eressos” they usually mean two places. Eressos is the traditional village a few kilometres inland, with its square, old stone houses and slower pace. Skala Eressou is its seaside twin, where most of the cafés, tavernas and small hotels line the beach. With a car you can stay in one and easily enjoy the other.
The beach at Skala Eressou stretches for almost three kilometres and has the dark volcanic sand typical of western Lesvos. It has been awarded the Blue Flag for its clean water. Because it faces west, it is also one of the best places on the island to watch the sunset.
A place of poets and philosophers
Ancient Eressos is traditionally considered the birthplace of the lyric poet Sappho, as well as of Theophrastus, the student of Aristotle often called the father of botany. Every September the village also hosts a well-known international women’s festival, which brings a lively, open atmosphere to the end of the summer season.
How to get to Eressos by car
Eressos is roughly 85–90 km from Mytilene, a drive of about an hour and a half. The usual route takes the main road west through Kalloni and then continues across the volcanic hills of western Lesvos. The landscape changes along the way, from olive groves and pine forest near Mytilene to bare, rocky hills in the west, and the drive itself is part of the experience.
A few tips for the trip:
- Roads in the west of the island are winding and villages are further apart, so fill up the tank before you leave the Kalloni area.
- Allow extra time if you want to stop for photos; there are many viewpoints over the Gulf of Kalloni and the western coast.
- Bring water and sun protection: the west of Lesvos is drier and hotter than the east in summer.
Combine Eressos with Sigri and the Petrified Forest
If you have a full day, make it a loop. North-west of Eressos lies Sigri, a small fishing village at the western tip of the island, and the Petrified Forest of Lesvos, a UNESCO-listed natural monument where trees buried by volcanic ash some 20 million years ago have turned to stone. On the way you pass the Ypsilou Monastery, built on top of an extinct volcano with wide views over the west of the island. Finish the day back at Skala Eressou for a swim and the sunset.
